Founded inthe Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus is a nonprofit organization that uses the power of music to celebrate diversity and promote inclusion. In light of today’s horrific anti-trans decision by the Supreme Court I share this powerful and emotional performance (last weekend) of “They Cannot Erase Us” by the brave and wonderful members of TRANScendent, Des Moines, Iowa, an ensemble of the Des Moines Gay Men's Chorus.

As a proud part of Iowa’s LGBTQ+ community, we create performances that uplift, inspire, and unite through song. The Art Center is excited to once again partner with the Des Moines Gay Men’s Chorus (DMGMC) to share some holiday cheer in advance of their upcoming winter concert, “Silver Bells.”.

They partner with Hoyt Sherman Place to perform a holiday concert in December. Through our voices, we show that we are here, we are whole, and we will not be erased. Committed to regular attendance for rehearsals and performances. Formed in direct response to anti-trans legislation in Iowa, our group was created to uplift and empower transgender and non-binary voices through the power of music.

We are a call to action for visibility, inclusion, and representation. Any unexcused absences would be a breach of membership in the small group. They take a mission-driven approach to their March concert, focusing on LGBTQ+ activism. Tristan prioritizes cultivating the ensemble as a safe and inclusive space for its members, offering private gender affirming vocal coachings, as well as engaging outreach performances.

And June’s concert is all about pride. Able to memorize all music performed. We are one of only a dozen ensembles of our kind in the country and serve as a beacon of hope for trans and non-binary individuals across Iowa, the Midwest, and beyond.
